The Social Wardrobe in Nisporeni: A Space Built on Solidarity and Civic Engagement

Families facing hardship in the town of Nisporeni can now access free clothing and essential household items through the Social Wardrobe established in the community. The initiative was implemented by the Public Association Orașul Morilor in partnership with the Nisporeni Town Hall and local social services, with financial support from Switzerland. It responds to the needs of people experiencing poverty and vulnerable families by providing free access to essential items and helping improve their living conditions.

At the same time, the initiative promotes community solidarity, the active participation of women, and collaboration between citizens and local authorities to identify and address community needs. It was developed as a result of citizens' active engagement in local decision-making processes.

Elena Paladi, Director of the Public Association Orașul Morilor in Nisporeni and the initiator of the Social Wardrobe project, has spent several years, together with fellow volunteers, supporting individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. She collected donations from community members and local authorities and stored them in a temporary improvised space. Over the years, requests for assistance came from children in urgent need of clothing and footwear for school, elderly people with health problems, refugees from Ukraine, and families affected by illness or the temporary loss of income.

Through the project Empowering Women, Girls and Civil Society for Gender-Responsive Governance, implemented by Terre des Hommes Foundation Moldova in partnership with UN Women Moldova and with financial support from Switzerland, the Public Association Orașul Morilor received support to promote women's participation in community development and strengthen cooperation between local residents and the municipal administration.

Through its partnership with the Nisporeni Town Hall, the Social Wardrobe now operates from a dedicated space where Elena and the project's volunteers collect donations, disinfect and sort the items, maintain records of beneficiaries, and distribute essential goods to people in need. "We want to create a safe place where people facing hardship can find the items they need in a welcoming, warm and dignified environment. We want them to feel that they are not alone," says Elena.

To date, around 40 residents of Nisporeni and nearby villages have benefited from the Social Wardrobe's services. Here, people can freely choose the items that best meet their needs and take clothing and other essential goods for themselves and their family members, knowing that their privacy will be respected and that they will not be judged.

The social wardrobe is equipped with shelves, clothing racks, a fitting room and carefully sorted garments. To ensure that donated clothing is properly maintained, the project also provided an ironing board and a steam ironing station. Volunteers explain that the space is organized so that people can discreetly select clothing, footwear, blankets and other household essentials without feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable.

Today, the Social Wardrobe's activities are sustained by a dedicated team of four to five volunteers. Elena Adam, a retired volunteer, primarily supports older people and elderly individuals living alone with health conditions. She explains that some beneficiaries contact her by phone and, when necessary, donations are delivered directly to their homes. In addition to distributing clothing and other essential items, she also assists people with administrative procedures, including preparing documents required to establish disability status. Elena also maintains close contact with members of the Moldovan diaspora, who regularly support the Social Wardrobe by donating clothing, diapers, children's products and other basic necessities.

"We live in a small community where people know one another, which helps us identify those who need support and respond quickly in emergency situations. The Social Wardrobe also works closely with social assistance services and child protection authorities. Some cases are referred by professionals, while others are brought to our attention through community members or by people reaching out to us directly," says Elena Paladi.

Among the beneficiaries of the Social Wardrobe is Mariana, a mother of four. Her eldest child was diagnosed with an incurable illness, and the family went through a financially and emotionally challenging period as the costs of caring for the children became increasingly difficult to meet. Through the Social Wardrobe, Mariana received clothing for children of different ages, toys, blankets, a baby walker, a stroller and food products for young children. These donations helped the family save valuable resources and meet other essential needs.

Mariana says that, beyond the material assistance, she especially appreciated finding people who were willing to listen to her and support her when she needed it most. "During a very difficult time for our family, the support we received from the Social Wardrobe meant so much to us. The clothes, toys and other items we received helped us save money and gave us the reassuring feeling that we were not alone. Thank you for your kindness and support," says Mariana.

To encourage women's participation in community life and local decision-making, Elena Paladi, Director of the Public Association Orașul Morilor in Nisporeni, organized a training seminar for women and young women from the community. Participants learned how to become more actively involved in local development, how to design project proposals, and how to contribute to setting community development priorities through participatory budgeting. In total, 25 women strengthened the knowledge and skills needed to play a more active role in community life.

The Nisporeni Town Hall is one of 22 communities across Moldova that are strengthening their capacity to integrate gender-responsive approaches into local governance, ensuring that women, vulnerable groups and other local stakeholders play an active role in community development.
