Girls around the world have the right to safety, education, health and free choice in terms of future career or hobby, regardless of stereotypes that are deeply rooted in our society. On the International Day of the Girl Child, we would like to share with you the story of Ana Maria Stratu, the young woman who, although faced many stereotypes when she chose to practice karate, has great accomplishments and is training now other girls passionate about this type of sport. Ana Maria is also one of the organisers of the annual Karate-do festival, which was supported this year by UN Women and Sweden.

To support gender equality and women’s professional realization in IT sector in the Republic of Moldova, the third edition of the National IT Training Program for Women was launched. This year, about 200 participants who aspire to a successful career in an innovative and booming field – information technology, are expected to attend the courses. The program is implemented by the National Association of ICT Companies (ATIC) with the financial support of Sweden and UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women) under the ‘Empowering Women in IT’ Project.

The COVID-19 pandemic determined a number of negative changes and impacts on the population. The pandemic affected Roma people in a disproportionate way and this is mainly due to their low standard of living and to the phenomenon of pronounced social marginalisation. These are the findings of ‘The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Roma Population’, a research performed by the Roma National Center in partnership with UN Women and funded by Sweden.
