Women from Boscana commune, together with women refugees from Ukraine, have organised a cultural activity to get to know each other better and exchange traditions and customs, at the initiative of the Congress of Local Authorities from Moldova (CALM), with support from UN Women and financial contribution from Sweden. It was the first time when women refugees accommodated in the commune managed to meet one another, share information, concerns and contacts. Boscana inhabitants also had the opportunity to become acquainted with women refugees who have been living in their commune for over two months.

Tamara Schiopu, 56, is an environmentalist and an expert in ecological agriculture from Moldova. She is the President of EcoLocal - Association of Organic and Artisanal Producers and Consumers of Moldova. Tamara has always been immersed in nature. The ‘Strengthened Gender Action in Cahul and Ungheni districts’ project was launched with the support of UN Women and is implemented by ‘Artemida’ NGO from Drochia aiming to develop assistance and counselling service for victims of gender-based violence and domestic violence (assistance for victims of violence) in Cahul and Ungheni districts.

Viorelia Chistruga is a 17 years old student from Birnova village, Ocnita district, a member of district youth council in the same locality. Viorelia, who is also a participant of the mentorship programme, says that she has found the opportunity to get involved and to elaborate gender equality projects after making many searches. She was interested in concrete opportunities where she could express her opinion and work on eradicating the phenomenon of sexual harassment.

A photo exhibition has been launched in Cahul, gathering the works of the 13 participants in the boot camp “Equality through the lens of a camera”, where they learned how to become gender equality and human rights advocates in the society, using photography for this purpose, while also giving them the opportunity to try out and master portrait shooting, storytelling photography and photo exhibitions.

The Moldovan labour market is characterized by considerable gender differences in terms of labour force placement, salaries and unpaid work, which reflect negatively predominantly on women. In the past years a number of provisions aiming at facilitating the access for parents to the labour market have been adopted at the national level. However, parents still face different difficulties in benefiting from new amendments. The main reason is the small number of institutions offering early childhood education.

‘16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence’ Campaign with the topic ‘Orange the World: END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN NOW!’ was inaugurated in Ungheni by holding a public discussion on the role of local authorities in fighting violence against women at the local level. According to statistics, 1 in 3 women was subjected to physical or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. COVID-19 pandemic worsened the situation of women affected by abuse. During the event, the local authorities reiterated the commitment of district administration to develop a specialised service for victims of sexual violence and take concrete actions to prevent and respond to violence.
