Fact sheet: The Women, Peace and Security Agenda
In 2025, we mark the 25th anniversary of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), unanimously adopted on 31 October 2000. It was followed by nine complementary resolutions and several related normative frameworks, which together form the broader WPS agenda.
The WPS agenda recognizes that women are often excluded from security processes and emphasizes the long-term positive impact of women’s meaningful and equal participation in conflict prevention, peace negotiations, peacebuilding, and recovery after conflict or crisis.
UN Women leads the implementation of the WPS agenda through research initiatives, data collection, knowledge sharing, and the documentation of good practices to inform policymaking and programming.
